Kanula ethical fashion

Kanula is an eco-friendly, ethical slow-fashion brand that focuses on helping to protect the planet – and actively supports sea turtle conservation.

Inspired by the beautiful island of Skiathos, with vibrant, nature-themed designs, each garment is made to be durable, comfortable and stylish.

Kanula was founded by Richard and Caroline Joyce. During their travels across Greece they were inspired by the landscapes, nature, and colourful ceramic designs that can be found all over the island of Skiathos.

They also became concerned about the plight of the sea turtles that nest on the beaches in Greece. Sea turtles face many threats from human activity, from beach recreation to commercial fishing to plastic pollution.

Richard and Caroline wanted to help, so developed Kanula clothing specifically to raise funds to help the turtles, with 8% of every purchase made donated to the Sea Turtle Conservancy.

The manufacture of Kanula clothes produces no plastic waste, and items are delivered in 100% plastic-free packaging. Marine plastic pollution is a massive global problem that harms ocean wildlife, including turtles – so a zero plastic waste policy is an important part of Kanula's ethos.

All Kanula hoodies, sweatshirts and tees come in a wide range of colours and designs. The colours range from neutral black, white or grey to vibrant blues, reds and greens, with attractive designs inspired by nature and the sea. The clothes feature lizards and sea creatures – including, of course, sea turtles. There are also options that feature just the attractive Kanula logo.

The T-shirts, hoodies and sweatshirts are available in unisex or women's fits, as well as a kids' range.

We were offered a hoodie to review, and – after a long time choosing – opted for the Pullover Hoodie with Crazy Fish design. This is available in 17 different colours, and we chose Atlantic – a gorgeous, deep blue-green colour that looks fantastic with black leggings or denim.

Kanula hoodies and tees are made with top quality organic cotton, and the first thing we noticed about the Pullover Hoodie was how incredibly soft it was. It would be an ideal choice for anyone with sensory issues, as the fabric is so comfortable. It was also surprisingly lightweight – but still extremely warm and cosy to wear. This makes it great for layering up for outdoor activities in winter, but equally suitable for pulling on over a T-shirt on cooler summer evenings.

The hoodie is true-to-size, with a relaxed fit that's ideal for active lifestyles, with no restriction of movement. It retained its vibrant colours and softness after washing – and, because it's relatively lightweight, it was also quick to dry. We air-dried it on the washing line, but it can be tumble-dried if necessary. Because it's lightweight and not at all bulky when folded, it would also be ideal to pack for travelling.

Since receiving the sample to review, we've already ordered another hoodie and a couple of T-shirts. For a company with such high ethical standards, the clothes are great value, with adult T-shirts starting at £21.

Finding clothing that is stylish, ethical, affordable and comfortable can be a real challenge. But Kanula has ticked all the boxes for our family, and this will be a brand that we will return to again and again.
